  VALLEY RECOGNITION  

Horner and Mate elected to receive M.S.A. Awards

Karl Horner

 Karl Horner and Terry Mate have been designated to receive the Valley of Cleveland, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Meritorious Service Award. The awards will be presented at the annual Ohio Council of Deliberations in June of 2001. Horner and Mate join the list of Valley of Cleveland honorees who have received the coveted award first established in 1947. Karl F. Horner, Vice Chairman of the assistant tyler’s committee, is a Past Master of North Star Lodge no. 638. He was the lodge’s Worshipful Master in 1963. Horner is a also a Past Master of Cuyahoga County Memorial Lodge and is the current treasurer. He is also a member of the Police Masonic Fellowcraft Club, secretary for the past 24 years. In the Scottish Rite, he is a member of the First Aid and Safety Committee, and has been a member of the Mummer’s Club for 24 years. He affiliated with the Valley of Cleveland in April of 1976. He is also a member of Al Koran Shrine. Karl retired from the Plumber’s Union in 1991 after 41 years of employment.

He and his wife Phyllis reside in North Royalton.

Terry R. Mate

 

 

 

 Terry R. Mate was Raised in Temple Lodge no. 28 in Painesville in 1978. He later demitted to Rising Sun Lodge no. 22 in Ashtabula and is presently serving Rising Sun Lodge as Senior Warden He is also a Past High Priest (1987-88) of Painesville Chapter no. 46, a Past District Education Officer of the 20th Capitular District); Illustrious Master (1985-86)of Painesville Council no. 104; and Eminent Commander (1988-89) of Eagle Commandery, Knights Templar. He has been a member of the Valley of Cleveland since 1979 and has served on the make-up committee for the past 21 years. He is very active in the allegory portions of valley reunions portraying the character of Daniel in the 15th and 16th degrees. His other Masonic affiliations include: LeRoy Shanower Council, Allied Masonic Degrees no. 149 (Adjutant General); Past R.W.M. Mark Master Lodge no. 2 (1989-1990); and Fowler Knight Masons Council. Terry has been one of the active leaders of in the Alzheimer Walk-Run/Masonic Volunteer program for the past several years. He is employed as an Electronic Data Interchanger at Standard Products in Cleveland. He and his wife Terry reside in Ashtabula. They are members of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Fairport Harbor. Congratulations Karl and Terry on receiving this valley recognition.

Two Valley of Cleveland members, Joseph S. Dickson, and David B. Mackey, received the prestigious Meritorious Service Award recognition with an impressive cap and jewel presentation ceremony at the Ohio Council of Deliberations meeting in Columbus, June 2, 2000.They join the list of Valley of Cleveland honorees who are designated the most deserving members in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland.

Joe Dickson is a three-term Past Master of Euclid Lodge no. 599, a Past High Priest and present secretary of Mount Olive Chapter no. 189; and Treasurer of Woodward Council no. 118. He is also a member of Holy Grail Commandery no. 70.He is a Past Grand Marshal and Past Grand Guard of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio.

He has been a member of the Valley of Cleveland since 1967. He is retired and resides with his wife Helen in Parma.

David B. Mackey is a 33 year member of Temple Lodge no. 28 in Painesville. He was Master of his Lodge in 1976. He was also a High Priest of Painesville Chapter no. 46 in 1975. He affiliated with the Valley of Cleveland in 1986. He has been Editor of the Scottish Rite News for 11 years.

David Mackey is semi-retired. He is the publisher of The Lake County Council on Aging Publication, Bridge, and Vice President and founder of CLM Associates, Inc.

He and his wife Carol reside in Willoughby.

Four elected to leadership posts in Valley of Cleveland

Four brethren in the Valley of Cleveland, A.A.S.R. were elected to lead their respective bodies for the 2000-01 Masonic term year. Re-elected for a second term after serving one year was Robert W. Thomas, Most Wise Master of Ariel Chapter Rose Croix. Those elected for the first time as presiding officers were Arthur G. Quade, Thrice Potent Master of Eliadah Lodge of Perfection, Ill.·. John A. Hall, 33°, Sovereign Prince of Bahurim Council, Princes of Jerusalem, and Bradford A. Goebel, Commander-in-Chief of Lake Erie Consistory.

The election and installation of officers was held at the Cleveland Masonic Center on Monday evening, May 1st.

ARTHUR G. QUADE

Arthur G. Quade, a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, was born in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended public schools in Ashland, Kentucky. After graduation from High School, he attended the University of Kentucky for pre-medical studies and graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland in 1953.Quade succeeds Ill.·. Kenneth A. DeLaat, 33° who has completed his two year term at Thrice Potent Master.

His Masonic career is as follows: Raised in Theodore Breck Lodge no. 714 in May 1975; Worshipful Master in 1981; received 25 year pin April, 2000; appointed District Education Officer of the 22nd Masonic District from 1983-1985; District Deputy Grand Master of the 22nd Masonic District 1986-1988; Grand Tyler of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, F & A.M. in 1997; Past High Priest of Corwin-Webb Chapter no. 205, R.A.M.; past Illustrious Master of Triangle Council no. 139, R. & S.M.; member of Holyrood Commandery no. 32 since 1985; appointed to the line of Eliadah Lodge of Perfection officers by Ill.·. Robert R. Wentz in 1988; and Coordinator and Chairman of the Ohio Masonic Service Association since 1991.A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Medical Corps from 1953-1955 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. After his discharge, Quade entered private Podiatric Medicine practice in Ashland, Kentucky. In 1962 he joined the Veterans Administration at Brecksville Hospital. He retired from the Brecksville Veterans Hospital in1990 after 30 years of Podiatric Medicine practice.

Presently he is a part-time Clinical Instructor at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine a post he has held since 1991.Quade and his wife Joan are the parents of two daughters, and one grandson. The couple reside in Brecksville and attend the Brecksville United Methodist Church.

Ill.·. JOHN A. HALL, 33°

Elected to the top post of Bahurim Council, Princes of Jerusalem, is Ill.·. John A. Hall, 33°. Hall was born in Sandusky, Ohio and received his education from Garfield Heights High School, Ohio University, and Kent State.

Ill.·. Hall succeeds Ill.·. Norman E. Schneider, 33°, who has completed his two year term as Sovereign Prince of Bahurim Council.

His Masonic career includes: Raised in Euclid Lodge no. 599 in 1973; Past Master of Euclid Lodge no. 599 in 1977 and 1985; High Priest of Mt. Olive Chapter, no. 189, in 1980; Past Illustrious Master of Woodward Council, R & S.M. in 1982; Past Eminent Commander of Coer De Lion Commmandery in 1986; Knight of the York Cross of Honour: Al Koran Shrine; Order of DeMolay Honorary Legion of Honor; Ohio Priory no. 18, KYCH; Walter Drake Council AMO; Royal Order of Scotland; Chief Artificer of the Trowellers, Order of Merit Ancient Craft Masonry; and Shannon Council no. 28 Knight Masons of Ireland. In 1998-1999, he served the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Ohio, as Most Illustrious Grand Master. Hall affiliated with the Valley of Cleveland in 1975. He was coroneted a 33rd degree Mason in Cincinnati in 1998.He was employed as a Driver-Education instructor for 37 years and Industrial Art Instructor for 32 years in the Richmond Heights School System. retiring in 1995. He and his wife Mildred reside in Leroy. They are the parents of six children.

ROBERT W. THOMAS

Robert W. Thomas was re-elected Most Wise Master of Ariel Chapter, Rose Croix at the annual meeting. Thomas was born in Chardon, Ohio and received his education in Newbury Schools, and Hiram College where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History in 1983.His Masonic Career includes: Raised in Village Lodge no.274 in 1982; Worshipful Master of Village Lodge in 1885-86; present secretary Village Lodge; High Priest of Willoughby Chapter no. 231 in 1989-90, and present secretary; Past Illustrious Master Woodward Council no. 118; Past Eminent Commander and Recorder of Eagle Commandery no. 29; DeMolay Active Legion of Honor recipient in 1991; member Ohio Priory no. 18; member of Caliph Grotto; member of Al Koran Shrine; R.W.M. DeMolay Mark Master Lodge no. 2 and present Secretary; Sovereign Master of LeRoy Shanower Council in 1996; King of Galilee Shrine no. 41, White Shrine of Jerusalem 1997-98; Order of Amaranth; Worthy Patron Clover Chapter no. 201, OES for four terms; member Urania Chapter no. 284, OES; member Shannon Council no. 28, Knight Masons of USA (Ireland); member Royal Order of Scotland; life member and trustee of The Cleveland Masonic Library plus several other Masonic affiliated organizations.

He affiliated with the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in 1982, and was appointed Captain of the Guard in Ariel Chapter Rose Croix in 1991.He will be coroneted a 33rd degree Mason this September in Pittsburgh.

He is employed by Ben Venue Laboratories in Bedford as a Technical Writer.

BRADFORD A. GOEBEL

Bradford A. Goebel was elected Commander-in-Chief of Lake Erie Consistory at the annual meeting May 1st. Goebel succeeds Jeffrey J. Black who has completed his two year term as Commander-in-Chief.

Goebel, a resident of Willoughby was Raised in Lyndhurst Lodge no. 508 in 1974 and elected Worshipful Master in 1981. He was President of the Past Masters Association in 1986. His other Masonic affiliations include: Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 22nd Masonic District in 1992 to 1995: PDDGM Association (22nd District Secretary-Treasurer in 1995; District Education Officer for the 22nd Masonic District 1988 to 1992; Valley of Cleveland, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 1979; Al Koran Shrine, President of the Patrol Unit in 1985; Euclid City Chapter, Order of DeMolay (Scribe 1968); Senior DeMolay Mark Master Lodge no. 2 (1982); Past Dean DeMolay Legion of Honor (1997); Holder of the Active Legion of Honor Award; Willoughby Chapter no. 202, O.E.S. (1988); member of the Grand Lodge Charity Committee and General Chairman of the 1997 Grand Lodge meeting in Cleveland. Goebel is a 1974 graduate of Ohio Northern University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is employed by The Horsburgh & Scott Co. in Cleveland as a Spare Parts Engineering Supervisor. He has been with Horsburgh & Scott since 1977.Goebel and his wife, Kathleen, reside in Willoughby where he is active in the South High Booster Club. The Goebels have two sons, Michael, and David. They attend the Fellowship United Church of Christ in Wickliffe where Brad served on the church council in 1988 and Vice - Moderator in 1990.Congratulations brethren.

New junior officers appointed to Eliadah Lodge of Perfection
and Bahurim Council, Princes of Jerusalem

One of the highlights of the Valley of Cleveland annual meeting was the appointment of new brethren to two lines of Valley of Cleveland. They are Roger L. Edgington, and James T. Schultz. Edgington was appointed as Captain of the Guard of Elidah Lodge of Perfection by Arthur G. Quade, Thrice Potent Master of Eliadah Lodge of Perfection. Shultz was appointed Master of Entrances by Ill.·. John A Hall, 33°, Sovereign Prince of Bahurim Council, Princes of Jerusalem. Roger Lee Edgington is a past Master (1994-1995) of Medina Lodge no. 58 in Medina. He is also a member of Berea Chapter no. 134, Royal Arch Masons, and Medina Commandery no. 84, a member of the Al Koran Shrine, and Medina Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, where he served as Past Patron in 1990 and 1993.In the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland, he has been active in every reunion since 1989 with many major speaking roles in recent years including Constans in this spring reunion’s 32nd degree. He is also the current secretary of The Medina County Scottish Rite Society.

Edgington is a graduate of the University of Akron with a B.S. in Computer Science. He is employed as a Program Manager at the Akron General Medical Center.

He and his wife Jane are residents of Medina.

James T. Schultz

James T. Schultz is a Past Master of John Barkley Lodge no. 621. He is also a member of Corwin -Webb Chapter no. 205, Royal Arch Masons, Forest City Council no. 111, and Forest City Commandery no. 40. He is also a member of the Al Koran Shrine, Al Sirat Grotto, and Forest City Chapter, Order of Eastern Star no. 374.Schultz is a Mechanical Technician Millwright at LTV Steel Corporation.

In the Scottish Rite, he has had several speaking parts in Valley of Cleveland Reunions, most notably that of Ignatius in the 32nd degree.

Jim resides on Snow road in Cleveland.
