July 15th dawned hazy and rain threatening due to an overnight thunderstorm that threatened the 11th annual Scottish Rite Golf Classic at Auburn Spring Country Club. However, the threat of rain did not hinder the six below par score of a team consisting of Bob Childers, Dan Martin, Greg Ball, and Bob Holschuh in conquering the 6835 yard 72 par, golf course. Runners-up with five under par was Team Weitzel, a team that has been in the running for the Golf Classic title the past several years, and a group of Past Masters from Norwalk, Ohio, a team that took Classic honors in 1993. In winning the Classic for the first time, Team Childers has seven birdies, ten pars, and one bogie. The team had three birdies on the front and came back with four birdies on the back nine. They had to overcome a bogie at the par four 442 yard 7th hole. They had birdies on the par five 472 yard 5th hole; the 129 yard par three 6th hole; the 342 yard 8th hole; the 337 yard par four 10th hole; the 520 yard par five 12th hole; the 149 yard par three 14th hole; and the 399 yard par four 18th hole. A super score, Team Childers. Team Weitzel was in the running throughout the day. They made birdie on three of the first five handicap holes, scoring a three on the 442 yard par four 3rd hole; a three on the 417 yard par four 16th hole; and four on the par five 480 yard 5th hole. They also had birdies on the 342 yard par four 8th hole; and the 331 yard par four 13th hole. A great round Team Weitzel. The course played hard. The holes were in the front of the greens; the par threes were tough; and a player had to hit an exceptional shot to the green to be on in two on all the holes. Most teams had to take three shots to the green on the par fives. Congratulations to the winners! See you all next year. |
