Scottish Rite awards Masons with top honors
Wilfrid A. Grose, Jr.
Nominated for 33rd Degree
In Valley of Cleveland

A group of 310 Freemasons were honored recently at the annual meeting of the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite Freemasonry for the Northern Jurisdiction of the United States. The Thirty-third Degree was conferred on the designees because of their service to the fraternity or to their community. Those who received the Thirty-third degree in the Valley of Cleveland included Illustrious Brethren, Jeffrey J. Black, Charles E. Hawley, Warren S. Johnson, Oliver A. Murphy, Robert W. Thomas, Morton S. Negin, and Russell J. Warren.

Sovereign Grand Commander Robert O. Ralston, the organization’s chief executive officer, announced the election of new officers.

Peter G. Huntsman of Vermont, Robert V. McDowell III of Delaware, and Phillip C. Kenney of Illinois, were elected deputies for their states. Huntsman replaces Richard W. Parker who will remain as an Active Member of Supreme Council.

Newly elected to the board as Active Members are Donald D. Thomas, Delaware, Gail N. Smith of Connecticut, Ralph I. Sewell of Maine, Frederick D. Greene of New York, Richard E. Hildebrand of Vermont, and Verdon R. Skipper of New Jersey.

Among the Scottish Rite Masons receiving the Thirty-third Degree were U. S. Congressman Paul E. Gilmore of Ohio and Nicholas H. Smith of Michigan.

In other action, Grand Commander Ralston announced the continuing expansion of the 32nd Degree Masonic Learning Centers for Children. In recent years, the Scottish Rite Masons have opened more than 25 leaning centers to provide free one-on-one tutoring for dyslexic children. Another 30 centers are scheduled to open in the next few years. A new flagship center is opening this fall at the Supreme Council headquarters in Lexington.

At the conclusion of the meeting, an announcement was made that 121 Masons, including Wilfrid A. Grose of the Valley of Cleveland, have been elected to receive the Thirty-third degree at next year’s meeting on September 25, 2001 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
