Electoral College delegate Ill.·. John D. Chiappetta, 33° casts vote for President

On December 18, Ill.·. John D. Chiappetta, 33°, made a trip to Columbus.   No, it wasn’t to cheer the Ohio State Buckeyes on to victory on the basketball floor or stadium, but to journey to the Ohio Statehouse where he cast an Electoral Vote for the next President of the United States.

Chiappetta, president of Euclid and Wickliffe Services, Inc., was recognized by Ohio GOP officials who invited him to Columbus to vote for the candidate he helped to win the popular vote in the state. He has been an active member of the Republican Party for 20 years and from 1990-1994, he was finance chairman of the Ohio Chapter of the GOP. This year he helped George W. Bush raise money in northeastern Ohio for his election to the presidency.

I’m honored,” Chiappetta said. “ It’s and exciting event that not many Americans have an opportunity to do. It takes an average person out of obscurity and gives them 15 minutes of glory.”

The Electoral College is ultimately where the presidency is decided. Each state is allocated electoral votes according to the number of representatives it sends to congress. Chiappetta joined 20 others in the State of Ohio who also were in Columbus to cast their Electoral College ballots.

John is a Past Master of Acacia Lodge no. 651 and a Past District Deputy of the 22nd Masonic District. He affiliated with the Valley of Cleveland in 1972. He was elected as a member at large of the Valley of Cleveland Board of Trustees and was subsequently elected Chairman. He retired from the Board as Chairman in 1992 The Fall 1993 Reunion class of candidates was named in his honor.

In discussing the Electoral College, Chiappetta said “ I think there’s a generation that doesn’t know how the system works. The attention that has been given to this year’s election has helped educate those who thought the presidential race was decided merely on the popular vote. Now they know differently.”

In Columbus, Chiappetta cast his handwritten ballot, signed it, and the ballot became an official part of the National Archives; thusly electing George W. Bush, President of the United States.
