Travel & Adventure series programs kick off
with trip to China January 21st;
travel to Nova Scotia in March

On Sunday afternoon, January 21, 2001, the Scottish Rite in The Valley of Cleveland will present the initial Travel and Adventure Film Series program in the Scottish Rite Auditorium at 3615 Euclid Avenue. The Travel and Adventure Film series is co-sponsored by the Valley of Cleveland and the Family Life Committee of the Valley. The film program begins at 2:30 p.m. It will be preceded by a musical concert by the Al Koran Orchestra directed by Paul Lawrence beginning at 2:00 p.m.

First, a little about the travel program that will be presented by Frank Klicar “China .. the Dragon Awakens.”

Traditionally, the west has considered ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome to be the cradles of modern civilization. Yet,4,000 miles to the East, arose a people whose technology and culture Europe would not match for a thousand years...Imperial China.

While Western Europe was locked in the depths of the Dark Ages, China’s culture was reaching its greatest brilliance. Marco Polo’s contemporaries disbelieved his stories about great cities with inhabitants robed in silk and jewels. Who could have known that this little known country would one day provide the world with inventions like paper, printing, gunpowder, the magnetic compass and civil service.

Examine the remains of Emperor Qin and his terra cotta army. Walk across the Great Wall of China. Learn about the city of Luoyang and the arrival of Buddhism. Travel along the Silk Road with a stop at the bazaar of Kashgar. Enter the home of a Uyiger family.

Journey across the Taklamakan Dessert to Turfan and visit a desert village. Inspect an ancient irrigation system and see the Tewin Sjhan Mountains. Meet the Kazahk nomads and share their lifestyle. Discover the many Chinese contributions to science. Watch the making of silk and wander through the gardens of Souzhou. Sail down the Great Canal. Watch Mongolian cowboys perform a roundup.

In Beijing, see the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, Tien’amen Square and the Summer Palace. Visit Guangzhou, Shanghai and Chunking and stop to admire the pandas.

Examine the rise of communism and the political and economic changes since Mao Tse-tung. Also look at Chinese agricultural, industry and consumer goods. Enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival, and the ethereal beauty of the Li River.

Sign-up a candidate for spring reunion; petitions now available

Do you know of a Master Mason in your lodge who wants to increase his light in masonry? Don’t disappoint him. Tell him about the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and the Valley of Cleveland. Tell him about our newly refurbished Cleveland Masonic Center building. Tell him about the great programs and events that masons and their families enjoy in the Valley of Cleveland. Then offer to give him a petition to the greatest Masonic learning experience he will ever have and that there is still more light in masonry than he has already received.

This spring, the Valley of Cleveland will honor Ill.·. Charles J. McCarty, 33°, a Past Thrice Potent Master of Eliadah Lodge of Perfection in the Scottish Rite, and Past Most Excellent High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio. His dedication and service to masonry qualifies him for the title of for whom the class is named.

Petitions for your mason are now available by calling the Valley Secretary in the Scottish Rite office at (216) 432-2370, by stopping in when you have business in the Masonic Center, or by writing the Valley of Cleveland office at 3615 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115.That petition along with the accompanying fee of $100 per candidate ($50 if he is under 35 and free if he a member of clergy) will grant him admission to the Spring Reunion and degree presentation in April. The Reunion will be held on two days...Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st. It will be the best 2-days in his Masonic career.

The degrees of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite for the Spring Reunion will be spread over a two day period. On Friday the degrees of Eliadah Lodge of Perfection will be presented. The degrees of Bahurim Council, Princes of Jerusalem, and the degrees of Ariel Chapter Rose Croix will be presented on Saturday morning. The beautiful degrees of Lake Erie Consistory are scheduled for that afternoon.

A dinner will follow the degree presentations.

The Spring Reunion will be another opportunity to get your Scottish Rite Passport stamped. By attending the reunion, you will be able to mark off two more degrees on your way to observing all 29 degrees for which you will receive special recognition from Supreme Council.

The 30th degree, one of the degrees scheduled for the Fall 2000 Reunion, was presented to the brethren on December 4th. If you were there, you have another notch on your Passport. Another of the Fall reunion degrees, the 8th degree, will be presented following the Four Coordinate Body meeting on February 5, 2001. Be there and get your Passport stamped.

In conclusion...get a petition for the Spring 2001 Reunion honoring Ill.·. Charles J. McCarty, 33°,...give it to a mason in your lodge...have him give it back to you for your recommendation... send it to the Valley of Cleveland office along with the appropriate fee....and come to the reunion with him April 20th and 21st.

Congratulations....Officers, degree coordinators, cast and crew who were responsible for the 30° performance

I am especially grateful to everyone who worked on this presentation of the 30th degree on Monday, December 4, 2000, in the DeMolay Room of the The Cleveland Masonic Center.

This degree is very demanding in the delivery of its symbolic messages emphasizing the experiences we must all encounter in the development of personal “excellence in character.”

The various tests in the degree are many and very diverse, as well as they require very intelligible delivery to the audience so they are capable of understanding, not only the intent of each incident, but the intent of the degree as a whole with all its words and actions. The attitude of presentation and style, the costumes, the sound, the props and the staging are all critical for the attention of each element requires and presents for the viewers. In most cases, you the brethren involved, made it all happen and come to life.

Another point of interest in this degree, particularly for those with DeMolay backgrounds, is a twice reference to the “Illustrious Grand Master of the Knights of Kadosh, Jacques de Molay” and particularly since it was presented in ....OUR DeMOLAY ROOM.

I want to thank each of you personally, therefore I am taking this opportunity to express my sincerest appreciation for the time, talent and dedication you each contributed to teach the lessons and importance of confidentially and trust which creates “individual excellence of character.”

I further wish to express my appreciation to all those attending this important degree presentation and the support offered those who conferred its lessons and your desire for additional Masonic knowledge revealed in the various degrees. We sincerely hope our goal was achieved and you received the message and lesson of “excellent character.”

My PERSONAL THANKS to all for your contributions to Masonry and the Scottish Rite.

Let me conclude by wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Scottish Rite 8th Degree to be presented February 5th

Intendent of the Building degree part of
Four-Coordinate Body meeting

It will be degree night at the Valley of Cleveland Four-Coordinate Body meeting on February 5th.Folowing the monthly meeting, the officers and brethren of the Valley will present the 8th degree, a degree that some ritualist in the valley say is the best of the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite. The 8th degree entitled “Intendent of the Building” teaches that each new honor is meant to be a step toward perfection in moral code; each a development of a particular duty; and that benevolence and charity are necessary virtues of leadership.”

The 8th degree was originally scheduled to be portrayed at the Fall 2000 reunion at the Valley of Cleveland, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the Fall Reunion had to be cancelled. The presentation of the 8th degree in February will make it possible to get another “notch” for viewing all 29 degrees on your Scottish Rite Passport which began with the Spring Millennium Reunion. It is the goal of the Supreme Council that every member in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction view the degrees of the Scottish Rite. Most of the degrees are the standard degrees that are always presented at the semi-annual reunion, namely, the 14th degree (Eliadah Lodge of Perfection); 15th & 16th, degrees (Bahurim Council, Princes of Jerusalem); the 17th, 18th degrees (Ariel Chapter, Rose Croix); and the 32nd degree (Lake Erie Consistory).

Two other degrees are usually added to the Reunion Program. The two degrees that have been presented since the inception of the Supreme Council program are the “George Washington” Degree (20th) presented last February, and the 30th degree which was presented December 4th. Be in attendance February 5th and get your Passport signed by the Secretary and you will be well on your way to observing all 29 degrees and receiving special recognition from Supreme Council.
