Center brings new self-esteem to students; help needed

By Robert S. Bodenstein, 33°
Member of Board of Governors
Valley of Cleveland Learning Center

As you read this article, everyone’s thoughts are of spring. Spring, as we know it, brings the re-birth of life that we look forward to every year. This yearly phenomena is not so different from what your Learning Center accomplishes every few months. That is, we see children who cannot read, dislike school, have a low esteem and take verbal abuse from some other children, all because they suffer from dyslexia. Your Learning Center brings about a rebirth of these children as their scholastic tutoring comes to a close. They immediately show a new surge of self-esteem that brings them equal to their classmates in school. What a thrill it is to be a part of such a rewarding experience when each child graduates.

It is not too late to make a belated New Year’s Resolution to make a pledge and support your Learning Center. Make this pledge to donate yearly and it will multiply over the years. It is estimated the cost of schooling a child for one year is $5000, so you see we have our work cut out for us and every little bit helps. Why doesn’t your Masonic Lodge pick up a donation to school a youngster for a year. This way your savings will be put to work. To school someone’s child or grandchild can make a lifetime difference not only by learning to read, but by improving the child’s self-esteem.

Your Learning Center, as of today, has 15 active students. This will increase to 20 students during the summer. One of the largest hurdles we have to overcome is the need for volunteers. We are not looking for a large commitment, only four hours of duty one or more times during the week. What a small commitment to make to your Learning Center. This is your chance to be involved with your Learning Center. If you can give us a few hours, call the Learning Center at (216) 881-2234 in the afternoon or early evening between the hours of 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. If you are on the fence as to getting involved, stop into the Learning Center and read the several letters the children have written to their tutors thanking them for the reading goals they have accomplished. Let’s make it easier for our tutors to give these children the schooling they need to overcome dyslexia. Put yourself in the position of a parent or grandparent with a child suffering from dyslexia with all the ramifications that this condition brings about. It has been said “Nothing Great Was Ever Accomplished Without Enthusiasm.” Get that enthusiasm now. Volunteer for a few hours a week and experience that great feeling of making a difference in a child’s life.

At present, approximately 900 students are in the Learning Center Program in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. We are expecting five more Learning Centers to open in the next year.

My Masonic brethren, we need your help desperately to volunteer a few hours a week. Please call the phone number listed in this article and give us a few hours of your time to help the children that we desperately love and can help.

Happy Easter to all from the children at your Learning Center.
