Nine under par wins July 13th dawned a perfect day for golf as 100 golfers teed off for the 13th annual Scottish Rite Golf Classic at Auburn Spring Country Club. The perfect golf day led to a near record score for the Scottish Rite Golf Classic as a group of masons from Norwalk walked off with the 2002 honors. The team, consisting of John Lichoff, Charles Taubler, Gary Meilke, and Alan Blair conquered the 6835 yard, par 72 golf course with a nine under par score of 63. This group of Past Masters from Norwalk, Ohio also took Classic honors in 1993 and 1996. Runners-up with seven under par was Team Youngblood, a team that had a great run for the title with a score of 65, and a team, captained by Bob Childers, who won the Scottish Rite Golf Classic in 1998 with a score of 65. In winning the Classic for the third time, the Norwalk group had nine birdies, completing the front nine five under par with a 31 and on the back nine, they shot a 32, four under par. Their previous wins were at Emerald Woods Golf Courses in Cleveland. They won the 1996 Classic with a score of eight under par. Team Youngblood, a team consisting of John Youngblood, Art Williams, Bob Leibold, and Joe Toncic, was in the running throughout the day. They matched the Lichoff team on the front nine with a 32, with five birdies, but ran into trouble on the back nine, shooting a 34. The Childers Team, Bob Holschah, Tony Lane and Tom Welling with Bob Childers, was also on the hunt shooting a front nine score of 32,with four birdies on the front nine, one more than the winners, but on the back nine, they shot a 33, with four birdies, another stroke more than the Lichoff Team. Another team in contention was the Rick Schau Team. They were just two off the pace after nine with three birdies and a bogey on the front nine. They then rallied with 4 birdies in a row on the back nine to match the winners back nine score. Another team that came up short on the front nine was Team Mackey. They had three birdies on the front nine, but a bogey on the par 4 ninth hole gave them a score of 34. They recovered to shoot a 32, making four birdies on the back nine, but it was too late. The Norwalk group was without two of their winning 1996 combination. Not playing this year was Mike Cozmyk and Ralph Roech. However their replacements filled in with some great golf. Following golf the teams were treated to a steak dinner with salad, vegetable, baked potato, beverage and dessert. Everyone ate well and appreciated the great day in Geauga County at The Auburn Springs Country Club. The 14th Annual Scottish Rite Golf Classic will be played sometime in July, 2003. Watch for details of the event in the March/April issue of the Scottish Rite News and join your brethren for a great day of golf. Special Awards for Specialty Shots
