Valley of Cleveland Family Life Observance
13th annual Worship Service
held at Old Stone Church

The Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland held the annual Family Life Program Worship service at Old Stone Church on Sunday, November 24th. The annual event is the 13th time that the brethren of the Valley have celebrated the Family Life Program at Old Stone Church.

Leading the Worship Service was Rev. & Doctor Gary L. Kornell, Pastor of Old Stone, and a member of the Valley of Cleveland. He was assisted by Mark J. Bollinger, Patrick J. Mann, and John Whitehouse, Jr., officers of the A.A.S.R. Valley of Cleveland.

The service was based on a Thanksgiving theme. Music sung by the congregation included “Come Ye Thankful People,” “Come and O Beautiful For Spacious Skies” and “Take My Life and Let it be...consecrated Lord to Thee.”

The world-famous Old Stone Church choir, directed by Eric Wicks, along with the Old Stone Church Pipe organ, played by Music Director William C. Shaffer, provided a moving religious musical experience for those who attended the service with two special anthems commemorating this festival season.

Dr. Kornell’s sermon topic “ThanksLiving--An Attitude of Gratitude!” was based on a passage from Exodus 17:7 which reads “ Is The Lord among us or not?”

The text for Dr. Kornell’s sermon is a favorite of his. It is significant because in it we may see ourselves questioning God on what has he done for us today as it was in Exodus when the Jews were being led by Moses out of Egypt to the Promised Land. They, and in some instances we, feel that God has abandoned us. However he has carried us this far and will not abandon us in the future.

He also made three points regarding Thanksgiving. (1) Remember to Remember and give God Thanks for the good things which you have enjoyed and the bad things which you survived with the help of God. (2) Thanksgiving is about ThanksLiving...it is a process...it is on-going...it is a life of gratitude. (3) Do not tempt God...don’t put him to the test. God is to be trusted at all times whether we win or lose. You can bet your life!

Following the 10:30 a.m. service, a reception for the brethren and guests of the Valley of Cleveland was held in the church social hall.

The Family Life Program worship service is an annual event on the schedule of the Valley of Cleveland. Plan now to attend this sacred and moving program at Old Stone Church in 2003.
