The United States Air Force Band of Flight, Commanded by Lt. Colonel Alan C. Sierichs, is one of twelve bands in the Air Force and one of two assigned to the Air Force Materiel Command. As one of the oldest bands in the Air Force, The Band of Flight has an unbroken record of service since its formation and shares with only The United States Air Force Band, Bolling AFB DC, the distinction of having remained at its original location for its entire history. The band was activated on 29 September 1942 at Patterson Field (later Wright-Patterson AFB), as the 361st Army Air Force Band. Between 1942 and 1948 the Band was re-designated three times: as the 661st Army Band, then as the 661st Army Air Force Band, and finally as the 661st Air Force Band on 2 January 1948, not quite four months after the Air Force became a separate branch of service. The band was re-designated as the Air Force Band of Flight in 1991. The Band’s purpose is to support the Global Air Force Mission in war and peace by fostering our national heritage and by providing professional musical products and services for official military, recruiting, and community relations events. Today, The Air Force Band of Flight consists of sixty active duty musicians assigned to fulfill mission requirements in specialized performing groups of the U.S. Air Force. Sixth Scottish Rite Degree to presented following March meeting The March Four Coordinate Body meeting, to be held March 3, 2003, of the Valley of Cleveland, will feature the portrayal of the 6th Scottish Rite Degree. The degree presentation will help to make it possible for the Sublime Princes of the Valley to achieve another portion of viewing all 29 Scottish Rite Degrees. It is the goal of the Supreme Council/Northern Jurisdiction and the Valley of Cleveland, beginning in April 2000, that every member should have the opportunity to view all the degrees of Scottish Rite Masonry in a timely manner. Brethren who view all the degrees presented will be recognized by Supreme Council. Six of the degrees (14-15-16-17-18-& 32) are usually presented at the semi-annual reunions held in the spring and fall. Another two degrees are usually portrayed as well. In order to complete the Supreme Council Degree Program, additional degree presentations are being made. Their presentation eliminates the need of going into other jurisdictions to observe the degree that you may need to complete your program. The special degree that will be presented March 3rd is the sixth degree entitled “ Intimate Secretary”, an Eliadah Lodge of Perfection Degree. The degree teaches that devotion to one’s friends and zealousness in performing one’s duties are rewarding virtues. The degree was last performed at the Spring 1997 Reunion honoring Ill... John H. Youngblood, 33°. We hope that many of you can make it March 3rd. Attend the monthly Four Coordinate Body meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m., greet your brethren, and see a degree that hasn’t been performed in the Valley of Cleveland for six years. Be sure to get your Passport signed so you can complete another degree on your travels through Scottish Rite Masonry. Valley of Cleveland / Family Life Program Feature Travel & Adventure series programs On Sunday afternoon, January 19, 2003, the Scottish Rite, in conjunction with the Valley Family Life program committee, will present the first in a series of Travel and Adventure programs in the Cleveland Masonic Center Auditorium at 3615 Euclid Avenue. The film travel program begins at 2:30 p.m. Come early and enjoy a musical concert presented by the Al Koran Shrine Band, directed by Paul Lawrence beginning at approximately 2:00 p.m. Costa Rica, located on the center of Central America, nurtures some of the last remaining natural treasures of the world. Emerald rain forests abound with rainbow-colored wildlife, mountain ranges with milky cloud forests, spectacular volcano environments and sandy tropical beaches. All together these wonders create the ‘colors’ that have lured visitors to Costa Rica’s shores and interior again and again. Of course, it is the people with their unusual friendliness and heartfelt hospitality that make any visit to Costa Rica special. However, with over 25% of its total landmass set aside as protected ecosystem, Costa Rica is unique in Central America. Sandy Mortimer explores both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, with almost everything in between, to capture the essence and ecological richness that is Costa Rica. In the northwest part of the country, we will visit cowboys and Brahma cattle ranches in the Guanacaste region. With its wild savanna grasses, Guanacaste is Costa Rica’s state of Texas. We tour its capital city, Liberia, called the “White City”. It was so named because the original residents carried white volcanic earth from the slopes of Rincon de la Veiga to build their distinctive white adobe homes. The nearby volcano, Rincon de la Veija, was named after the legend of an old woman that once lived on its slopes. Now it is a National Park, with four complete ecosystems contained in its 35,000 acres. We hike this site to see twenty acres of hot springs, boiling mud pots, sulfur lakes and vapor geysers that color the surrounding rocks red, green and vivid yellow. It is easy to understand why it is called the “Costa Rica Yellowstone”. To the west is Santa Rosa National Park. In 1856 an American, William Walker, planed to conquer Nicaragua and use its people as forced labor to build canals from Lake Nicaraugua to the Pacific. The site where Walker was defeated by Costa Rican peasants at La Casona is now a national monument. Colorful crabs and howler monkeys watch us along the way. Valley of Cleveland Travel and Adventure series programs are intended to promote family relationships. Bring your family and friends and enjoy this educational and informative program about our neighbors to the south. Refreshments will be served following the Travel and Adventure program.
