ABBOTT & ROSS R. BLACK
SCHOLARSHIPS Time is running out for assistance in the form of scholarship grants to members of Masonic families who are seeking grants in aid for the education of their children, or grandchildren. Applications for the Supreme Council Blue Envelope Abbott Scholarship Fund and the Ross R. Black scholarship fund are due April 1, 2003. They are still available from the Valley of Cleveland Secretary’s office by calling (216) 432-2370 or by writing him at 3615 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115. To qualify, an applicant must be a family member of a Valley of Cleveland Scottish Rite Mason. The applicant may also have been a member or is a member of one of the masonic youth organizations. The applicant must also be a graduate of a public or private secondary/preparatory school. To qualify, an applicant must provide a copy of a grade transcript and either ACT or SAT scores and report sources of family income as reported to the IRS. Grants will be awarded to full time students only. The amount of the scholarship is dependent upon funds available. However it is hoped that individual grants will range from $500 to $1000 per scholarship. Grants will be paid directly to the educational institution at which the recipient has been accepted. Students who were awarded scholarships last year were: Gretchen N. Streiff of Mentor; Meghan E. Campbell of Cincinnati; Lisa J. Cawrse of Willowick; Melissa L. Cazan of Parma; Alexis K. Dvorak of LaGrange; Lauren K. Eble of Mentor; Chad M. Hawley of Zanesville; Lauren R. Null of Elyria; Lauren E. Epp of North Royalton; James E. Grose of South Euclid; Joseph R. Rehnert of Fairview Park, and Nikol I. Stefanos of Strongsville. Donald R. James $1000 Scholarship Fund The Donald R. James Scholarship Fund has made available a $1,000 scholarship for this fall term. Applications for this scholarship may be requested from the Valley of Cleveland Scottish Rite office. The fund was established by Donald R. James in memory of J. Barker Smith, a former Potentate of Al Koran Shrine. The funds currently are in trust and will not be available until the death of the donor. In the meantime, the donor is providing $1,000 per year for interim scholarships. Those eligible to apply for the scholarship must be male, a mason or a blood relative (includes stepfathers of masons), be enrolled in a pre-med or medical school. Sports Medicine qualifies. The scholarship can be obtained yearly by completing an application form with the Foundation. Send scholarship application requests to the Valley of Cleveland, 3615 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115. Requests for an application can also be made by calling the valley office at (216) 432-2370.
