Does your day begin anything like mine? Do you need that cup of coffee and the morning paper? I pour through just about every section of the paper. There's a need to read the latest war news, political events, stock market trends, baseball standings, even the ads, and yes, sadly, the death notices and obituaries. I confess I scan the entire page of death notices every day. Invariably, I find myself looking for that all familiar Square and Compass of our beloved Masonic order. In a special and mysterious way, there's a fraternal connection with each of these notices. As I read the death notices and obituaries, I'm struck by the many and varied memorial suggestions offered by families in which to remember departed loved ones. Some suggest a college or university or the leukemia, cancer, heart, or diabetes societies, or hospice--all of which are fine charities. It is then I realize that the 32° Masonic Charities are not suggested quite as frequently as other memorial remembrances. Wouldn't it be especially nice if loved ones would request memorial remembrance gifts and donations be sent to the 32° Masonic Learning Centers for Children? Each loving donation would be a true living memorial, as it goes to help a child with dyslexia learn to read. Other suggested memorials could be our 32° Charitable contributions to the Leon M. Abbott Scholarships, Schizophrenia research or our National Heritage Museum in Lexington, Massachusetts. In the days ahead should you have an opportunity to influence a memorial or remembrance decision, may I urge you to suggest that one of our 32° Scottish Rite Masonic Charities be included. I know I will; how about you? |
