See the Lights at Oglebay Park
in West Virginia |
Our triennial trip to the Holiday Festival of Lights at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, West Virginia is scheduled for Saturday, December 6th.
The Oglebay Winter Festival of Lights, begun in 1985, has grown into the nation’s largest holiday light show, attracting more than a million visitors per year, including 3,000 tour buses from more than 36 states. It covers more than three hundred acres over a six mile drive throughout the resort. More than 50 displays and over one million lights spread over 300 acres are featured in the celebration.
Original display favorites include a Candy Cane Wreath, The Twelve Days of Christmas and Willard the Snowman, named for the TV weatherman Willard Scott who “turned on” the lights in 1986. Other fun displays include steamships, fishermen, golfers,
Cinderella and her coach, dinosaurs, and much, much more. This year’s display honors “Peanuts” creator Charles Schultz by representing some of his best-loved characters in lights. In addition to the Peanuts’ light displays, another new holiday light display will honor the 100th anniversary of the 4-H Clubs of America.
