Learning Center celebrates
successful year; looks forward to making greater strides in 2004

By Ill.·. Robert Bodenstein, 33°
Member Board of Governors

As the days get shorter and winter looms on the horizon, one can only think of the great strides our beloved Learning Center of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction has made over the past year. Included in this are the activities such as The Ladies’ Association Card Party which was a huge success and our Recognition Dinner for our tutors. This year we have grown in may ways. We graduated an increased number of students, we have more tutors this year and we increased our number of volunteers.

Enthusiasm for our Learning Center is running higher, not only with your Board Members but throughout the Teaching Personnel and our Director. A great man once said “Nothing great was ever accomplished without enthusiasm” and your Board shows the enthusiasm. This is a great year for your Learning Center as our President’s wife, Laura Bush, is devoting her time traveling the U.S.A. and five countries promoting reading for children. This has also been taken up by the American Broadcasting System with Book Mobiles that will criss-cross the U. S. visiting schools and libraries to promote reading for children. The slogan for this reading program says in effect...No Child Will Be Left Behind (referring to his or her reading ability.) Many such programs have been initiated throughout the country at this time promoting reading for children. I feel this program is wonderful for our children but it cannot be accomplished completely without the work we are doing at our Learning Centers teaching dyslexic children to read.

At our August board meeting, we had a visitation from David Winter from the Scottish Rite Headquarters in Lexington, Mass. He gave us an overview of their collection of data from each of the Learning Centers in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. He also gave us a favorable report on our collection of data and the job being done by your Director and Board Members.

As this year ends, tax time is not far behind. Why not make your Learning Center contribution before the end of the year. In the next two months, send you donations in so you can add another sticker to your Teddy Bear Club Plaque. Why not ask your lodge secretary to make a donation with another lodge or two to support a child for one year of schooling. This amounts to $5000 for one student for one year. Also, do not overlook the sale of Teddy Bear ties as a Holiday Gift. We have red, blue and a new tie that is maroon for $25 each. The purchase benefits your Learning Center.

If you have a person you would like to honor or remember, make a donation to your Learning Center and a note on your behalf will be sent to the honoree or family not stating the amount of the donation.

In closing, on behalf of your Learning Center, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holiday Season.
